It's been a rough week, so I indulged in a little hair love to help relieve a bit of the stress. Caring for my hair is a delight, and I regularly play in it to help me relax 💆🏾♀👩🏾🦱. Last night, I opted to blow out my hair just a tad for a professional mugshot I had to take today (y'know, those official photos where you're not allowed to smile).
I've got A LOT of hair, but when I put my hair in plaits, it's really hard to tell its true volume, as hair -naturally- condenses. Natural hair also shrinks, and my shrinkage is pretty extreme. The photos below were taken less than 12 hours apart. The one on the right was how I walked into the shower, and the one of the left (the 'wash-n-go' style) was how I walked out.
I often surprise people when I stretch or undo my hair, and a big part of the trauma of going to hairdressers back in the day was that the moment I started undoing my plaits/ twists, everyone would suddenly get "too busy" and no one wanted to do my hair. It was usually the kindest soul there who would take pity on me and do it. It's been such a relief to not have to go through that anymore... not unless I choose to at least (which I do roughly once a decade).
I may not be able to do a plethora of styles like so many talented Black women, but I've been caring for my hair entirely by myself for the past 11 years, and I think I've been doing an excellent job at it. Here's to a little hair love 💕
